Elope Hat Pins
Ranging from 6 to 12 inches long, the pins passed through one side of a hat, caught a section of hair in an updo, and exited through the other side to keep heavy hats from blowing away in the wind. They featured elaborate heads made from jewels, precious metals, ivory, or enamel, often serving as a status symbol of wealth and fashion. Long before the Victorian era, simpler pins and wires were used in the Middle Ages to hold wimples and veils in place.
